What is a QR code?
A Quick Response (QR) code is a type of 2D barcode. Storing data both horizontally and vertically, this code can communicate a variety of information with just one scan.
As opposed to 1D barcodes with a series of parallel bars that must be read right to left, QR barcodes store data as a series of pixels that can be read from top to bottom and right to left. To decode this QR data, your scanner must be equipped with a 2D area imager scan engine.
Advantages of QR codes over standard barcodes
- Hold more data – Standard barcodes only hold data in one horizontal dimension. QR codes can hold data in two dimensions: both vertically and horizontally.
- Store information with less space – With a more compact structure, QR codes enable your business to save on printing costs and label space.
- Scan with ease from any direction – Unlike a 1D barcode that must be aligned with the scanner, a QR code can be captured successfully at any angle.
- Readable when damaged – QR codes boast a higher error correction margin, still working even if up to 30% of the code is illegible.
What is a QR scanner?
A QR scanner is an optical scanning device that utilises 2D area imaging technology to read QR codes. This device will take a complete picture of the QR code in a single scan, before decoding its information. QR barcode scanners can also capture other 2D symbologies, such as GS1 DataMatrix codes, and are therefore suitable for use in a variety of industries.
