What are 1D barcodes?
As the name suggests, 1D barcode scanners only scan 1D barcodes. These barcodes communicate data using a series of black bars and numbers, with parallel lines and spaces of various widths. Once a 1D scanner reads this barcode, its information is converted into alphanumeric data that serves to identify the labelled item.
Commonly used in retail, warehousing and distribution, these barcodes usually hold 8–15 alphanumeric digits that are best utilised in cases where associated information is updated regularly, such as item price or location.
Unlike 2D barcodes, a 1D barcode relies on database connectivity to make sense of its encrypted information.
1D vs 2D barcode scanners
1D scanners can only read 1D barcodes. 2D scanners, however, are capable of capturing both 1D and 2D barcodes with advanced area imaging.
Encoding horizontal and vertical information, 2D scanners can hold more data and are capable of more aggressive scanning in demanding environments. They are best suited to workplaces without database connectivity and where greater amounts of data are required. As 1D barcode scanners read and hold less information, they are often the more economical solution.

Linear imaging scanners vs laser scanners
Laser scanners
Capable of reading linear symbologies such as UPC, Code 39 and Code 128 on paper surfaces, laser scanners use a red diode laser to process the reflectance of a barcode’s black lines and white spaces. The scanner must be horizontally aligned with the barcode to capture iits data successfully.
The most widely-utilised 1D scanners in Australia, laser scanners can read data from several inches to several feet away according to the size and condition of the barcode. Laser scanners are also available with extended ranges for enhanced flexibility.
Linear imaging scanners
Linear imaging scanners function like a digital camera to take an image of the 1D barcode. The image is then analysed to decode its data.
These 1D scanners capture 1D barcodes rapidly and accurately, even if they are damaged or poorly-printed. Eliminating the need for precise alignment, linear imagers offer more advanced and aggressive scanning at roughly the same price as laser alternatives. They are also capable of reading barcodes displayed on screens, unlike laser scanners.
